boreholeOndije - The group of people standing at the exact place where they plan to drill a borehole

ondijeThe drilling project in areas where people have no clean running water, stays high on Kunene for Christ's agenda. Erik, dr. Burger Oelofson (geologist) and Piet Prinsloo, a farmer in the Outjo district, visited the Ova-Himbas of Okaanga and Ondije in March 2011.

They reassured them that Kunene for Christ will remain committed to the drilling of a borehole at Ondije. ondijeJohannes Muharukua, the councillor of the Epupa region and also a member of the Dutch Reformed Church, accompanied them to ascertain the need of the people and if possible to join hands with KfC to address the problem.

Drilling project at Ondije

cruiserOn 9 February 2012 Erik left for Kaokoland in his brand new “Cruiser” to organize the drilling of a borehole at Ondije. Saturday, 11 February he arrived at the headman of Ondije, Uasuvisa Tjavara. The headman said that everything is ready, it is very dry, the money is available – the drilling can start. On Sunday evening he contacted Daniël van Rhyn in Omaruru, Burger Oelofsen and Piet Prinsloo on their farms in the Outjo district and told them to be on their way.

convoy

On Wednesday morning Daniël van Rhyn's convoy encountered Erik, Burger and reverent Jason Gambue – an old Ford F 250 bakkie, a truck with casings and drill rods and the truck with the air pressure drill.

startDaniël started drilling at about 14h00 that Wednesday afternoon. Very quickly the drill drilled into the scali soil type, which never keeps water. Between 85m and 90m we saw wetness in the soil. They saw some pieces of sandstone in the scali which could keep water. He blast the hole and waited for an hour, then the water sprayed from the hole. They thought the borehole was dry, but Daniël said that if the borehole can be developed, the Himbas will have enough drinking water, but it will not be enough for cattle as well. The right hand pump will bring ample water for the community and the school. The water tasted very good and should be perennial for the whole year round and even better in the rainy season.
